How to Measure a Box Size

Believe it or not, there is a correct way to measure a box. Measuring a box incorrectly will result in inaccurate price quotes and wasted time which can cost you money. To avoid confusion to the estimator, and to get the best pricing possible, present your dimensions as follows:

Place the box so that the opening or loading side is facing up, as if you are going to fill the box. Have the front of the box facing you.

Now measure from left to right – this will be the LENGTH.

Next, measure the side panels, front to back (some may mistake this as the depth), this is the WIDTH of the box. The width is generally a smaller number than the length. If the box is square,  then the length and width will be the same number.

Lastly, measure from the top to the bottom of the box but don’t include the closure flaps. This is basically the measurement of how deep the box is inside, and is called the DEPTH.

Length x Width x Depth  =

Right to Left x Front to Back x Top to Bottom

L  x  W  x  D
