What is the Average Price for… [insert packaging type here]?

This is one of the questions my readers ask the most.

There are a ton of variables that can affect the price of packaging greatly, volume having the greatest impact.

Variables That Affect the Price of Packaging (just to name a few)

  • packaging volume (the amount you order)
  • the different machineries of each packaging manufacturer (the amount of set-ups required)
  • transportation distance
  • print methods
  • size of the packaging company (their overhead)

In spite of all these cost of packaging variables, I have created a Packaging Price Spectrum for 2023 that offers an *approximate* price range for various types of packaging at 10,000 units, in US currency.

Hi Sara. I am looking at marketing a line of flavored pistachios. Production and distribution are pretty well covered. I am starting from scratch on packaging. I am looking at small (maybe 4-8 oz.) bags and would probably start w/ a 5k unit order if I can go that small. Any thoughts or direction you could share w/ me would be greatly appreciated!

    Thanks!

    1. Hi Rick, as you may have figured out, starting with 5K units is a good quantity for flexible packaging like standup pouches. There are several online brokers that now offer custom printed standup pouches using common plastics, however they are not very sustainable. I can’t say how good the print quality is, so I would ask for samples before committing.

  2. Excellent information! Thank you, Sara.
